TEAM NORAMISE’S 2nd trip to HAITI!!
Members of Helping Hands Noramise arrived in Limbé, Haiti, to follow up on it’s first trip and see how the seeds sown had grown.
On the agenda was further research regarding the tilapia farm, distribution of donated vitamins and clothing for the local children, getting the residents to continue addressing the trash pile in the market place and searching for an appropriate site for their home base in Limbé Mural in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Some aspects of the trip were very successful; paying for and getting the wood coorpertive that has started, to build benches and desk for a local free school, in exchange for electric tools which we will raise money to buy. This kind of local partnership is what Helping Hands Noramise hopes will help built trust among Haitians and bring in some capital to the local economy. Visiting a nearby tilapia farm and getting information regarding different construction options, in order to proceed to the next phase of this project. Holding a rally in the market place and having residents share their ideas on the trash problem, were all forward progress for the Team.
The team also traveled to Port-au-Prince to get a first hand look at how the aid is being distributed to those in need. Unfortunately, the news on that front is not so good. A fair amount of the foods and materials sent for aid are not making it into the hands of those most deserving. What is happening is these goods are being sold on the streets both in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Others are going into the hands of friends and relatives of those charged to distribute them.
We’ve have seen this same problem with disaster aid in many incarnations. It’s time that those of us who really want to make a change in other people’s lives take a more personal stand. Ask that the organizations you are donating your hard earned monies to, to be more accountable for those funds. Don’t just send off that tax deductible check. GET INVOLVED!!!!
